Researchers have found a family of malware that targets both Windows and OS X. Janicab.A, is the trojan which is also unusual because it uses a YouTube page to direct infected machines to command-and-control (C&C) servers and follows a clever trick to conceal itself.

When researchers from F-secure and Webroot documented new trojan threatening Mac Users. Like other recently discovered OS X malware, Janicab was also digitally signed with valid  Apple Developer ID. It also used special unicode character known as right-to-left override to make infected file appear as PDF document rather than a potentially dangerous executable file.

On Monday researchers from Avast published an article reporting that Janicab can also infect computers running Windows. The strain exploits a vulnerability Microsoft patched in 2012 to install a malicious Visual Basic script that can remain active even after infected machines are restarted.

Like the Mac versions, Janicab randomly chooses a YouTube link from a hard-coded list to find the C&C sever that issues updates and instructions. One such page contained the words "just something i made up for fun, check my website at 111.90.152.210/cc bye bye.". Researchers presume the IP address may have been the location of one of the C&C severs.

New method of producing electricity from green house gas co2 has been devised by the scientists. As described in an article of ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters, the method uses CO2 from electric power plant and other smokestacks as the raw material for making electricity. 

According to the statistics electric-power-generating stations worldwide release about 12 billion tons of CO2 annually from combustion of coal, oil and natural gas. Home and commercial heating produces another 11 billion tons. Smokestacks gas from a typical coal-fired plant contains about 10% CO2, which not only goes to waste, but also it induces the global warming.

Bert Hamelers' (Ph.D.) team have found a way to change that trash into treasure. They devised a technology where this waste green hose gas CO2 would react with water or other fluid following up a special process. This produces a flow of electrons that make up electric current. It could produce about 1,570 kilowatts of additional electricity annually if used to harvest CO2 from power plants, industry and residences. That's a big achievement. 

Amazing! As much the green house gas produced will be produced at the same time more than half of it will consumed. Let's see when the world wide nations pay attention to this unique invention.

Akamai has released its State of the internet report for the first quarter of 2013, and when it comes to connection speeds, things are looking up.

According to the company, internet is growing, which has analyzed the Web through it's intelligent Platform analysis tool. It's found that the total number of unique IPv4 addresses hitting the Internet in the first quarter has reached to 734 million, or approx 34 million more than compared to the fourth quarter of 2012.

Meanwhile, Web connection speeds rose by 4%, climbing to a worldwide average of 3.1 Mbps. The global average peak speed was 18.4 Mbps.

South Korea is the world's leader in average connection speed, topping by a highest speed ever i.e. 14.2 Mbps. Hong kong was able to tally the highest peak connection speed of 63.6 Mbps. South Korea's success was due to its position as the world's leading broadband nation, with half of its citizens subscribing to the high-speed connection.

Akamai also offered up some data on security issues on the Web. The company found that attacks originated from 177 countries during the first quarter. Interestingly. China's attack traffic fell by 34% during the period, but Indonesia's impact as a source of security threats grew from 0% share to 20%. The U.S. accounted for 8% of all attacks.

One other interesting tidbit : traffic from mobile devices increased by 19% between the fourth quarter of 2012 and first quarter of 2013, and is double the mobile traffic from the first quarter of 2012.

Americans consumed less coal to generate electricity, sign of green future. U.S. energy charts released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory states that Americans are using more natural gas, solar panels, wind turbines to generate electricity thus moving a step ahead for our green environment. Overall, Americans used 2.2 quadrillion BTU, or quads, less in 2012 than the previous year. (BTU or British Thermal Unit is a unit of measurement for energy; 3,400 BTU is equivalent to about 1 kW-hr).

Wind power has raised it’s production from 1.17 quads in 2011 up to 1.36 quads in 2012. New wind farms are becoming more efficient by the implementation of new turbines that have been dveloped in response to government-sponsored incentives to invest in renewable energy.

Solar power alos has jumped from 0.158 quad to 0.235 quad in period of just one year ranging from 2011 up to 2012. Tremendously decrease in the rate of photovoltaic cells has also fascnitaed the green tech users.
